National Flag of the 12th Wisconsin
This regiment was organized in the fall of 1861. After service in Kansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee, the 12th Wisconsin came under Grant’s command, fighting through Mississippi to Vicksburg. The regiment also fought in southern Mississippi, moving to Sherman’s command. Places in the 1st Brigade, 4th Division, 17th Corps, the 12th Wisconsin fought at Kennesaw, Atlanta, and through Georgia to Savannah. After the Confederate surrender, the regiment was mustered out on July 10, 1865. Three-hundred and twenty-three soldiers of the 12th Wisconsin died during the war. This flag comes close but does not obey the regulations entirely. While the gold battle honors and location of the unit's name are correct, the use of white (or more often silver) for the name and stars was discontinued after 1851.
