Mitsumasa Overstreet, Artist-in-Residence
NPS
An El Paso–based public artist and painter, Overstreet brings more than two decades of experience creating art for airports, museums, botanical gardens, and community spaces. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from California College of the Arts. His current fine art practice draws inspiration from the Chihuahuan Desert, the Rinpa tradition of Japanese art, and stories shared by the public.
His local commissions include River Spirit and The River / El Río: Both Sides, No Sides at El Paso International Airport, Water is Life at La Nube Children’s Museum, and the JUNTOS mural on Geronimo Drive. His work has also been exhibited at the El Paso Museum of Art and San Antonio Botanical Garden.
During his Chamizal residency, Overstreet will gather reflections on family, home, relocation, and belonging from people in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. With participants’ permission, selected words and images will inspire a new series of prints and paintings exploring the Chamizal Treaty’s lasting human impact. Building on his earlier River Spirit installation, this project connects personal memories with Chamizal’s legacy of diplomacy and shared understanding.
Join us for his upcoming public program! Details will be posted soon on our event calendar and social media.
