Masjid Al-Ansar (Miami, Florida)

African American Civil Rights Network

Masjid al-Ansar, located in Miami Florida, was originally named Muhammad’s Mosque #29 and was established in the 1960s by the Nation of Islam community. The mosque’s current location was purchased in 1966. The building sits at NW 7th Avenue and NW 53rd Street in Miami and is the first extant mosque in Florida. It was instrumental in the establishment of all subsequent mosques in Florida, including the Coalition of South Florida Muslim Organizations.

Masjid Al-Ansar became part of the African American Civil Rights Network in 2023.

The African American Civil Rights Network recognizes the African American Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the sacrifices made by those who fought against discrimination and segregation. Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017, and coordinated by the National Park Service, the Network tells the stories of the people, places, and events of the U.S. African American Civil Rights Movement through a collection of public and private resources to include properties, facilities, and programs.
