Project Profile: Caneel Bay Resort Environmental Cleanup and Remediation
Inflation Reduction Act
Restoration | FY24 $8,800,000
The National Park Service will remove contaminated soils from the Maintenance area and a legacy unlined, unpermitted landfill at Caneel Bay Resort in Virgin Islands National Park. The work will mitigate risks of landfill collapse and surface water contamination of an adjacent intermittent stream that flows directly into the protected waters around the island.
Why? The removal of contaminated soils from the maintenance area and landfill at Caneel Bay Resort will address environmental issues impacting the local St. John community and the preservation and protection of Caneel's natural and cultural features. The presence of hazardous substances poses risks of surface water contamination and potential slope failure, endangering adjacent waters and ecosystems; furthermore, this project seeks to restore the site's ecological health and safeguard surrounding marine environments.
What Else? The cleanup efforts will employ remediation technologies and removal actions to protect human health and the environment, contributing to the preservation of the protected waters around St. John. This project will complete the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) process and mandated environmental remediation.
