Interior Architecture at Grant's Tomb

The monument was completed in 1897, and cost $600,000 to complete which was all donated by people from all over the world. The interior features 143 ft ceilings and 8,000 tons of white marble and granite.

The Grant family chose New York as Grant’s final resting place for a few reasons. First that while Grant was dying of throat cancer, he made it clear that no matter what he wanted a spot with Julia by his side, and he mentioned New York City in his note of potential locations. Secondly, the City of New York promptly reached out to the family after the news of Grant’s death. The location of Riverside Park was selected to allow a large enough space to honor Ulysses’ legacy and have space for Julia to be beside him. This location was also close enough to the Grant's New York City apartment so that they could easily visit the memorial and pay their respects.
