Montgomery County proposed a new hydropower project at an existing dam on the Schuylkill River, located downstream from the Valley Forge National Historical Park and adjacent to the Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area. The Schuylkill River, the largest tributary of the Delaware River, is a well-known destination for paddling, motorboating, water-skiing, collegiate rowing, and fishing. The area also features a network of recreational trails that follow historic transportation infrastructure including a relocated historic truss bridge and historic railroad bridge, offering visitors a rich blend of outdoor activity and cultural heritage. In 2024, the NPS HAP participated in the initial public meeting and site visit. The NPS HAP supported the applicant and the community by identifying potential issues, guiding them through the FERC process, and informing stakeholders about NPS resources available in the area. The NPS HAP addressed concerns about the potential long-term closure of recreational facilities during construction and proposed alternative solutions to maintain access. A key objective for the NPS HAP is to maintain safe public access during the construction phase, enabling the project to move efficiently through the FERC process while enhancing existing recreational opportunities.
