US Army veteran Vincent Gray is one of three that comprise a team dedicated to preservation and improvement projects of the Fort Donelson National Cemetery.

Having served in the US Army, what does it mean to you to service in your present service at Fort Donelson National battlefield and Fort Donelson National Cemetery?

It is a privilege to keep our National Cemetery in pristine condition to honor those buried here.

Many veterans bring a diverse set of skills to their work. Can you highlight a particular skill or experience from your military service that you find especially valuable in your current role?

While in the military, I had the privilege of serving on the funeral details of Ft. Campbell soldiers lost in the Gander plane crash. This experience brought me to a new level of understanding about the hallowed ground where I am blessed to work each day.

What cemetery improvements have you been involved in at the national cemetery, and how do you feel your work contributes to the broader mission?

Improvements include ground maintenance, caring for and pruning trees, leveling, and straightening head stones. I believe this work keeps the cemetery in good condition to honor those buried there. Our work is important for future generations to pay respects.

Can you share a particularly proud or rewarding moment you’ve experienced while working at the Fort Donelson National Battlefield and Fort Donelson National Cemetery?

Veterans and visitors take time to stop and compliment on how well the cemetery is maintained. Additionally, Ft. Donelson employees have taken notice of the improvements as well.

As we approach Veterans Day, what would you like the public to know or understand about the contributions of veterans working at Fort Donelson National Battlefield and Fort Donelson National Cemetery?

As veterans, we have a special sense of honor to fellow soldiers that are buried at Ft. Donelson National Cemetery. Supporting and maintaining the cemetery feels like helping fellow soldiers in their final resting place by showing respect from one soldier to another.
