Final Resting Place
John Duncan, the selected architect for Ulysses and Julia's final resting place, originally wanted to use a single sarcophogus for both remains until Julia objected to this plan saying "General Grant must have his own sarcophagus, and I my casket beside him."
A red granite from the quarries in Wisconsin were used for the sarcophagi, and Grant's sarcophagus was finished first at 8.5 tons, 10 ft. 4" long, 5 ft. 6" wide, and 4 ft. 8" deep. Both sarcophogai are standing on a 10 ft. 10" grey-blue Quincy granite.
