Tuliptree or Tulip Poplar

Tuliptree or Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera)

Identification

This deciduous canopy tree is known for growing exceptionally straight. The Tuliptree produces large broad leaves that host variable numbers of pointed lobes depending on age and individual variation. While fresh leaves may have no discernible lobes and mature leaves many, the leaves maintain their general shape. A consistent mark of a Tuliptree leaf is a vshaped notch at the top, meeting in the middle. Distinguished from Maples by the leaves' alternating arrangement on the stem. On mature individuals, the bark near the base of the trunk will begin to show a braided pattern.
