The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (The Wright), located in Detroit, Michigan, strives to open minds and change lives through the exploration and celebration of African American history and culture. The Wright Museum features several exhibitions, houses over 35,000 artifacts and archival materials, and is home to several collections and a repository of Detroit labor documents. The Wright also sponsors film series, lectures, book events, workshops, performances, and other special events which allow audiences to connect with the works of noted scholars, activists, and artists.
The Wright’s “And Still We Rise: Our Journey Through African American History and Culture,” a permanent exhibition, is one of the longest-running exhibitions in the United States dedicated to African American history. “And Still We Rise” offers a comprehensive look at the history of African American resilience. It features more than 20 galleries which begin in Africa, travel through the Middle Passage, and conclude in the Americas. The exhibit highlights the contributions of national African American heroes, many of whom were leaders of the civil rights movement. Further, in its collections, exhibitions, and programming, The Wright centers Detroit, and the iconic role the city has played in American history, including the civil rights movement.
The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History became a part of the African American Civil Rights Network in 2023.
The African American Civil Rights Network recognizes the African American Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the sacrifices made by those who fought against discrimination and segregation. Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017, and coordinated by the National Park Service, the Network tells the stories of the people, places, and events of the U.S. African American Civil Rights Movement through a collection of public and private resources to include properties, facilities, and programs.
