Success Story: The Boundary Dam Hydroelectric Project

The Boundary Dam Hydroelectric Project is located in Metaline Falls, Washington, on the Pend Oreille River. In March of 2013, the FERC awarded a 42-year license for the project to the licensee, Seattle City Light. During the relicensing process, the NPS HAP collaborated with the licensee, other agencies, and local communities to develop a plan for recreational site improvements. This plan included improved fishing, boating, and camping access, a new trail and viewpoints, and a river ranger program, all of which enhance economic growth and recreational experiences for the Pend Oreille River Water Trail and local rural communities. These improvements increased connectivity to project site features including canyon views of uncommon geological features, nearby waterfalls like Peewee Falls, and paddling and water access at the Forebay Recreation Area and Metaline Waterfront Park. This project is one of the largest FERC-regulated hydroelectric projects in the country, producing 1,003 megawatts (MW), which is equivalent to powering approximately 842,000 homes.
