Meet Tony Portales.
Tony was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas with a deep love for his community. He has always found joy in giving back, participating in various local volunteer opportunities prior to volunteering at Padre Island National Seashore. One of his most meaningful volunteer experiences was helping his local church build a community garden, a project that continues to thrive today. Tony’s passion for nature led him to Padre Island National Seashore, where he has been volunteering for over four months. For Tony, the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing the wonder and curiosity on visitor’s faces. Whether he’s assisting with surf fishing classes, engaging with visitors at outreach events, or roving the beach, Tony goes above and beyond to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience when visiting the Park.
“I feel proud to put on this uniform and show up for the community.”
Through his time at the park, Tony has gained a deeper appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that keeps Padre Island National Seashore running. “From maintenance and law enforcement to interpretation and resource management, they all work together to protect and preserve just what makes this place so special for future generations to come.”
When asked what he would say to someone considering volunteering at Padre Island National Seashore, Tony’s advice is “Do it! The park needs your contribution and input. We are all stewards of the land. Giving back to nature is one of the best ways to show your gratitude and appreciation.” Tony’s dedication to stewardship and passion for connecting people with the Park has not gone unnoticed. Without volunteers like Tony, Padre Island National Seashore would not be the same.
