B Reactor Atomic Culture Room: Godzilla
Main Text
Text reads: “Godzilla first roared onto the big screen in 1954 as Gojira, a Japanese film that reflected the widespread cultural anxiety of radiation and the potential long-term effects of the atomic bombings in post-war Japan. This icon of monster movies, Godzilla, is awakened by thermonuclear weapon testing in the Pacific Ocean and goes on a rampage through Odo Island and Tokyo. The movie ends with Godzilla’s defeat, but on the ominous note that if humans are not careful, it could happen again.”
Exhibit Panel Description
A color poster, entitled “Movies,” shows a dense cluster of shops and signs with names written in English and Japanese, and a larger than life sculpture of Godzilla’s head at the top center with a gaping maw and claws on top of the buildings. Text informs this is the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, Japan, and that Godzilla peers over the buildings with occasionally glowing eyes and smoky breath. A title at the bottom center reads, “Godzilla.”
