Pets

Pets must be leashed and closely monitored at all times while in the national parks along the trail. They are allowed in developed areas of the park; including paved roadways, parking areas, and Namakanipaio Campground. However, please note: parking and camping areas are sites where the endangered nene goose frequent. Be alert - protect our native species from harrasment by dogs.

The entire Ala Kahakai Trail is comprised of short segments of many Hawaii Island trails, crossing through public as well as private land. Shoreline access points lead to sections of trail connecting some of the best Big Island Hawaii beaches, particularly along the west coast. Most state beaches along the trail do not allow dogs. Please pick up after your pets and properly dispose of any waste. Pets may not be left unattended in a vehicle.

In Hawaii Volcanoes NP
Pets must be under their owner's control and restrained on a leash no longer than 6 feet in length at all times. Pets are prohibited in all of the undeveloped areas of the parks. This includes all designated wilderness and all trails. Pets are not allowed on Hilina Pali Road; including the Kulanaokuaiki Campground.

In Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau NHP
Pets are permitted in the picnic area, on the 1871 and along coastal trails. Pets must be under their owner's control and restrained on a leash no longer than 6 feet in length at all times. Pets are not permitted in the Royal Grounds or in the Pu'uhonua areas.

In Kaloko-Honokohau NHP
Dogs are allowed on the beaches and trails provided they are under thier owner's control and leashed at all times on a leash no longer than 6' in length.

In Puʻukoholā Heiau NHS
Dogs are allowed on the beaches and trails provided they are under thier owner's control and leashed at all times on a leash no longer than 6' in length. Visitors and pets are not permitted to enter the heiau.
