1797 Commemoration Event

San Juan NHS and the Regimiento Fijo de Puerto Rico (a volunteer reenactment group of 18th century Spanish soldiers) were commemorating the successful defense of San Juan during the 1797 British Attack on Puerto Rico. On April 17, 1797, under the command of General Ralph Abercromby, the British made a third and final attempt to take Puerto Rico, the coveted Key to the Indies and Gateway to the New World, from Spain. (The first two British attacks on San Juan were in 1595, Drake and 1598, Cumberland.)
