Also referred to as Gran Brigitte, Manman Brigitte was the wife of Baron and a lwa of death in African Voodoo. Similarly to Baron, Manman Brigitte's spirit guards cemeteries and graves and takes the souls of the dead. Additionally, Manman Brigitte determines the fate of those who are dying or ill, and has the power to heal sicknesses. Although she is most prominent in Haitian Voodoo, Manman Brigitte originated in Great Britain as St. Brigit, the Celtic goddess of smithcraft, healing, and poetry. An ancient ceremonial chant supports this theory, as it states: "Manman Brijit, li soti nan anglete" or "Manman Brigitte, she comes from England." Due to the benevolent nature of this lwa, many people sacrifice rum in order to summon her. |
