When Trinity Church established that no African Americans could be buried within the churchyards of Manhattan, free and enslaved Africans were left to bury their dead beyond the city limits. Injustices like this happened throughout America before and after the Civil War. The National Park Service is collecting these stories as we approach the 150th anniversary of the Civil War's end.
