Wharf Stabilization and Repair Project

The wharf stabilization and repair project will make repairs necessary to stabilize Derby and Central wharves and provide additional protection against future erosion. Work on this project is scheduled to begin on May 28th, 2024 along the east side bulkhead of Derby Wharf and will continue throughout the summer and early fall. The project is anticipated to be completed by winter 2024.

The wharf stabilization and repair project is being funded by the National Park Service. Derby Wharf, built in 1762, and Central Wharf, constructed in 1790, are on the National Register of Historic Places and are National Historic Landmarks.

Pedrick Store House Preservation

Exterior preservation work began in May, 2024 on Pedrick Store House on Derby Wharf. National Park Service employees and Student Conservation Association interns will be doing exterior maintenance and preservation work for approximately six weeks.

Work, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act, will take place one side of the building at a time, starting with the east side. The work team will be repairing and replacing clapboards and trim, cleaning and oiling the building, and securing loose historic nails. This work should not impact access to Derby Wharf.

The Pedrick Store House was built in Marblehead, MA, just across the harbor from Salem, in 1770 by Thomas Pedrick, a successful member of the merchant community in pre-Revolutionary War Marblehead. In 1993, the building was purchased by the town of Marblehead. After plans for restoration of the building in place were unsuccessful, the National Park Service accepted the building in 2003, and began several years of conservation on the original 18th century timbers.

Wooden Fence Behind the Derby House

Work has restarted to replace the wooden fence around the colonial revival garden behind the Derby House. This work is expected to take a few months to complete.

The new fences will follow the existing fence lines to ensure that fence designs and heights will not be changed from the original historic 1930s/1940s Norman Newton designs. Modifications include changing the wood type in some locations to ones that are more resistant to rot. The color of the fence will remain the same but will be stained instead of painted in order to increase durability.
