Hiking at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument offers over 50 miles of trails through rugged Maine wilderness. Hiking trails are found in the southern section, northern section, as well as in the Seboeis parcel areas of the monument. With short hikes as well as longer backpacking routes available, there is something for everyone.
Hikers need to assume individual responsibility for planning their trips, staying safe, and reducing their impact on the park. Plan ahead and check out our Leave No Tracepage to learn more.
What to Bring on the Trail:
Sturdy footwear (waterproof hiking boots are recommended)
Drinking water! There is no potable water in the monument boundaries. Hikers and backpackers are responsible for carrying in or filtering water. Dehydration is a common cause of exhaustion, fatigue and headaches.
GPS Devices are recommended. Cell reception is spotty in the monument, carrying a GPS or satellite device is strongly recommended especially on overnight trips.
A Map & NPS App with Katahdin Woods and Waters downloaded to offline mode onto your phone. Cell service is unreliable at the monument. Know where you are and where you're going at all times!
Protection from biting and stinging insects. Insect repellent, long sleeves, and a bug head net are highly recommended in spring and summer seasons.
Sunscreen and hat
Rain gear and proper clothing for the season.
Trekking poles (especially for crossing streams and rivers)
Wear blaze orange if hiking in the surrounding area during hunting season.
