Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Trumbull, Jr.

Trumbull, Jonathan Jr. 1740-1809

Jonathan Trumbull was the younger son of Governor Jonathan Trumbull of Connecticut. His brother, Colonel John Trumbull was a well known artist and called "The Chronicler of the American Revolution". Jonathan was named Paymaster General of the Northern Department by Congress in 1775. He held this office until he resigned in July 1778. Congress then elected Jonathan Trumbull the first Comptroller of the Treasury in 1778. He did not stay in this position long, resigning this post in 1779.

In February 1781, Alexander Hamilton left George Washington's staff and was replaced by Trumbull. He was given the rank of lieutenant colonel and his official position was as Military Secretary. He served in this position throughout the Yorktown Campaign and on to the end of the war.
