The Whiskeytown Plein Air Painters, a newly formed group of Northern California artists, will demonstrate the technique of “plein air” painting during Whiskeytown National Recreation Area’s “Waterfall Week Celebration”. The Whiskeytown Plein Air Painters will do outdoor painting demonstrations on Sunday, May 20th and Saturday, May 26th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on location at both Whiskeytown Falls and Crystal Creek Falls.
Painting outdoors on location, plein air painting has its roots in the impressionist period of European art history. Plein Air painters have played a key role in helping to preserve many of our National Parks.
The Whiskeytown Plein Air Painters alliance has eleven founding members who come from very diverse backgrounds but share a common interest in painting outdoors in the beautiful natural settings so prevalent in northern California. All of the members are accomplished artists who display and sell their art in a variety of regional and national venues. Chuck Prudhomme, the group’s president, states, “In addition to our goal of promoting outdoor painting one of the group’s primary goals is to promote public interest at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area through special events and community outreach programs”.
The Friends of Whiskeytown, a nonprofit devoted to supporting Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, will provide art supplies for the public to try their hand at creating their own art outdoors.
The public is also invited to view completed artworks created throughout the park by the Whiskeytown Plein Air Painters, on Sunday, May 27th on the lawn at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A portion of any art sales will go to the Friends of Whiskeytown organization. The Whiskeytown Visitor Center is located on the corner of Highway 299 and Kennedy Memorial Drive.
For more information stop at the Visitor Center, open daily 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and beginning Memorial Day weekend 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or call Sheila Edridge, Artist-in-Residence coordinator at 396-2353.
