George Washington

George Washington remains the essential figure throughout early American history. He was known as the “indispensable man.” His steady, determined leadership helped shepherd the fledging American Independence movement through the dark days of the Revolutionary War toward an eventual peace settlement with Great Britain. After his military career, Washington was recalled to duty to preside over the 1787 Constitutional Convention and, later, to serve as the First President of the United States from 1789 until 1797.
