Ensure a Safe and Enjoyable Visit

Your visit to the park should be both enjoyable and safe. By following these guidelines, you can make the most of your time while ensuring your well-being.

Vehicle Safety

  • Protect Your Belongings: Always be mindful of your vehicle's security by not leaving any visible items inside, regardless of their value or where you park. Even small items can attract attention. Remember, the park is not responsible for lost or stolen property, so take precautions to secure your belongings before leaving your vehicle.

Finding Sites in Richmond

Richmond is rich in history, particularly related to the WWII Home Front, with multiple historic sites scattered throughout the city. To explore these locations safely and efficiently:

  • Pick Up a Map: Start your journey by picking up a detailed map from the Visitor Education Center. This map will guide you to the various historic sites, helping you navigate the area with ease.
  • Check Site Accessibility: It's important to note that not all sites marked on the map are open to the public. Before heading out, check in with the Visitor Center during operating hours to confirm which sites are accessible. The staff is available to assist you with directions and answer any questions you might have. For additional help, feel free to contact us at 510-232-5050 Ext. 0.

Waterfront Location

The park's waterfront setting offers beautiful views and a unique atmosphere, but it also requires some preparation to ensure a comfortable visit.

  • Check the Weather: Before your visit, take a moment to check the local weather forecast. Dressing appropriately for the conditions will help you stay comfortable, whether it’s a sunny day or a breezy afternoon by the water. For an overview of average temperatures and typical weather patterns, you can visit our "Weather" page.
  • Sun Safety: If you plan to spend time outdoors, particularly in the open areas along the waterfront, make sure to apply sunblock to protect your skin from harmful sun exposure. Hats and sunglasses can also provide added protection.

Use Handrails

  • Safety First: When navigating steps or pathways within the park, always use handrails when they are available. Weather conditions can cause surfaces to become slippery, especially after rain or when moisture accumulates, so using handrails is a simple way to prevent slips and falls.

Red Oak Victory Ship

The Red Oak Victory Ship is one of the historic highlights in Richmond, offering a glimpse into the past. However, safety is a top priority.

  • Weather-Related Closures: For the safety of visitors, the ship will be closed during rainy conditions. If you’re planning a visit to the Red Oak Victory Ship, be sure to check the weather forecast and call ahead to confirm whether the ship is open. Your safety is our primary concern, and we appreciate your understanding.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your visit to the park and its surrounding historic sites is both safe and enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you and helping you make the most of your experience.
