Chinatown Honolulu

Honolulu's Chinatown

Chinatown Honolulu, Hawaii

For many years, Honolulu’s Chinatown was not considered a tourist destination despite its designation as a historic district. The restoration of the Hawaii Theatre, the emergence of art-related businesses in previously vacant buildings, and Weed & Seed designation all helped shift these attitudes, but language and cultural barriers still prevented interaction between visitors and local businesses. Local tour groups treated the area more like a living museum rather than a community. With the help of a Preserve America grant, themes that interpret the importance and influence of this neighborhood will link Chinatown’s heritage with existing ethnic businesses.
