Dubuque County Jail

Dubuque, Iowa

Dubuque is home to one of the few remaining Shot Towers in the country. The tower was used to make shot and bullets during the Civil War by dropping lead from the top to form round bullets as it fell. The NPS Save America’s Treasures grant program awarded the city a total $923,627 from four separate grants to repair the shot tower, and also a historic steamboat, the Grand Opera House, and the unique Egyptian Revival-style jail. Recognized as a Preserve America community, the city is serious about preservation and heritage tourism. With help from a Preserve America grant, the city created an exhibit and education program for the Mines of Spain, a national historic landmark, and established the Dubuque History Trail. Dubuque ranks as one of NPS’s most successful local partners in historic preservation.
