Fort Ord Dunes State Park

Monterey, California

Beach Ridge Road

This four-mile stretch of shoreline beach with beautiful views of Monterey Bay was once filled with the noise of shouts and gunfire. As a U.S. Army training center for beach combat, Fort Ord gave critical training to hundreds of thousands of soldiers for actions in World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Now, its 979 acres have been provided to the State of California through a Federal Lands to Parks transfer. Fort Ord Dunes State Park opened in 2009 to make the dunes and beach open to the public. The delicate sand dunes also protect the homes of several species of wildlife.
