The Crete Youth in Governance Team is a leadership and life skills program. The youth work with adults to improve their own lives and their community. The Crete team conducted community forums in which local citizens expressed their interest in recreational trails. This led to an application to the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program to plan a trail in Crete’s Tuxedo Park. RTCA provided information on trail design and planning, including types of trails, accessibility, and funding strategies. The students researched and met with city officials to learn more, then used GPS units to map potential trail sites. Trails were plotted on a map and RTCA drafted a plan. The students presented the final plan to the Crete City Council and received approval and a grant for the first phase of the project.
