Animas River Trail

Visitors and solar panels alike are enlightened.

Aztec, New Mexico

The City of Aztec is creating a Main Avenue Walkway from downtown across the Animas River to the visitor center at Aztec Ruins National Monument. Along the way, visitors can learn about the Old Spanish National Historic Trail near its historic river crossing location. In 2010, the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program assisted City staff and volunteers with a community survey about trail use and trail preferences. At the National Night Out event and the City’s Oktoberfest celebration, trail volunteers spread the word about the new trails, and organized hayrides along the trail right-of-way.
