Centerville, South Dakota
Bordered as it is by the Vermillion River, the small town of Centerville, South Dakota, was determined to construct a trail system that takes advantage of this beautiful natural resource. The National Park Service’s River, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program partnered with the American Society of Landscape Architects to see whether an improved network of trails in Centerville was feasible. A study determined that it was and that it might include not only river paths but also bicycle lanes on streets and dedicated pathways to schools. Centerville is pursuing these new trails through a Safe Routes to School grant and other funding.
