Hardwick, Vermont
The old Bemis Block was a big part of this Vermont town’s Main Street until it was damaged in a fire. A nonprofit group stepped up to restore the building with help from a National Park Service federal historic preservation tax credit. The top floors became affordable housing for seniors while the bottom floor was rented by a local foods restaurant. The preservation of this structure sparked orther rehabilitation projects, and won a historic preservation award from the American Institute of Architects.
