Meadow River Rail Trail

The future Meadow River Rail Trail

Rainelle and Nallen, West Virginia

A new 17-mile nature trail planned for the Meadow River valley between Rainelle and Nallen, WV, has garnered considerable local, state, and federal support since CSX Transportation announced in 2008 that it was abandoning this section of railroad right-of-way. That year, the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program, the community assistance arm of the National Park Service, notified regional community leaders of the opportunity to convert this property to a trail. The leaders organized a team to spearhead the effort. The team received Recreational Trails and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus funding in 2009 and soon completed an independent property appraisal. In 2011, the team expects to oversee completion of soil and trail management plans, the design and construction of the first mile of trail, a long trestle, and a trailhead near Russellville, WV, and finally the official acquisition of the corridor.
