Anchorage’s urban landscape includes coal miners’ cottages, a hotel where a U.S. President slept, an art Deco theatre, and the influence of Russian immigrants. Now real and arm-chair visitors alike can get a glimpse of the the historic downtown. As part of the 50th anniversary of Alaska’s statehood and thanks to a National Park Service Preserve America grant, the city and its partners launched a new website, developed a walking tour, installed historical markers, and created an education program that provides materials to teachers. The website offers excellent videos of historic properties and throughout the downtown area.
