Georgetown, Colorado
One of the most successful Certified Local Governments in the country, Georgetown, Colorado, has capitalized on its mining heritage. A Save America’s Treasures grant aided the rehabilitation and reuse of an abandoned schoolhouse. This was followed by a Preserve America grant that transformed the town from a place skiers passed through, to a tourist destination in its own right. A local historian produced markers to highlight distinctive buildings, increasing the marketability of the town; as a result, preservation and heritage tourism have revitalized the community.
