Blue Island, Illinois
Blue Island was founded in 1835. Today, the home of the first settler still stands in the city’s historic district. Residents are proud of their history and their city, but did not have the resources to capitalize on its assets. With the help of a Preserve America grant, Blue Island is now telling its story, planning, and promoting events to invite people to eat at neighborhood restaurants, shop at the stores, see the city’s history, and check out the parks. The grant let Blue Island invest in its heritage by funding a project to promote the city’s culture. Blue Island is telling its story with cohesive branding and public outreach. As a result of this project, community organizations are pulling together to improve the city.
