Volunteer: Museum Management

Overview
Provide support to museum staff with routine museum collection activities and special projects. The volunteer will assist professional staff and have opportunity to work in an active museum research environment, learn more about collections management, and gain behind-the-scenes experience at sites where collections are stored or exhibited.

Duties
Assist the Museum staff with tasks related to museum collection management, including inventories, museum housekeeping, cleaning Lighthouse lens, reorganizing items in collection storage, photographing museum objects. Also assist with organization tasks in the library and archives such as retrieving photos and copying or scanning for research requests, filing library research materials and books, creating inventory lists for archival collections.

Training
An orientation to the museum operations and the job training will be provided.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired
Necessary:
Very good organizational skills, good handwriting/printing, computer literacy, ability to comfortably lift up to 30 pound boxes and climb ladders, attention to details, documentation and following procedures for careful handling of museum materials.

Desirable: Any experience working with historical objects, specimens archives or in a library. Knowledge and experience working with databases and systems, knowledge of photography, interest in natural and cultural history.

Schedule and Time Commitment
The program is available Monday through Friday, 4 hours/day, 2-3 days/week; must be OK with pre-planned but varied schedule. After a trail period of 1 month, we are looking for an individual who will make at least a year commitment, as the position requires a good deal of training.
