During the month of May, the National Park Service, local fire departments, UC Cooperative Extension, and the California Fire Safe Council will present two community wildfire protection workshops in West Marin. The first workshop will take place at the Bolinas Community Center on Tuesday, May 9, 7:00-8:30 p.m. The second workshop will be at the Dance Palace Community Center in Point Reyes Station on Wednesday, May 24, 7:00-8:30 p.m. The workshops will provide vegetation guidelines for increasing the fire safety of homes and other structures, as well as information on fire resistant building materials. The workshops will include an update on the Marin Community Wildfire Protection Plan, and an overview of the Fire Safe California Grants Clearinghouse.
West Marin residents are encouraged to attend one of these workshops in preparation for the coming fire season. Most of the information presented at the two workshops will be the same, however, the Bolinas and Stinson Beach workshop on May 9 will have some emphasis on fuel reduction in and around Bolinas and Stinson Beach, while the Dance Palace workshop on May 24 will have some emphasis on the Inverness, Olema, and Point Reyes Station areas.
In addition to National Park Service and fire department personnel, guest speakers at the workshops will include Steve Quarles, UC Cooperative Extension Advisor, and Amber Gardner, Coast Region Grants Coordinator for the California Fire Safe Council. Steve’s areas of expertise include physical properties of wood, and the performance and durability of wood and wood-based products subjected to wildfire and moisture exposures. Amber currently manages grants for community wildfire protection in California’s coastal communities, after previously serving as Diablo Fire Safe Council Coordinator in the East Bay.
A special section of the Bolinas-Stinson workshop will be presented by Ray Moritz, of Moritz Arboricultural Consulting. Ray will give a summary of a fire hazard assessment he completed for Bolinas which includes hazard ratings for developed parcels in the Bolinas Fire Protection District, and identifies other fuel reduction priorities on the Bolinas Mesa. The Bolinas Fire Hazard Assessment was funded with $20,000 in 2002 through the National Fire Plan, and was accomplished under a cooperative agreement between the National Park Service and FIRE Safe MARIN.
For more information on the upcoming workshops, contact Jennifer Chapman, National Park Service Fire Education Specialist, at 415-464-5133 or by email.
