Climbing Tips

Please remember that rock climbing is an inherently dangerous activity. The park does not inspect or maintain any climbing routes or climbing hardware. Follow the safety advice below before climbing:

  • Have the necessary skills and experience or climb with an experienced partner. Human error is one of the most common causes of injuries and fatalities.
  • Bring the appropriate equipment and know how to use it.
    Sport climbing is limited to an approximately two mile band of cliffs. "Topping out" and placing bolts without a permit are prohibited.
  • Traditional climbing and bouldering are allowed throughout the park.

Did you know that the Obed Wild and Scenic River is one of seven designated National Park Service sites located in Tennessee? Many visitors from the central part of the Volunteer State stop in at the Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro before making their way east to visit the Obed.
