    March for Parks Success Stories - 2004

    Makoshika State Park, Montana

    Makoshika State Park held their March For Parks event on April 17th, 2004. Twelve participants walked in a 4 mile march and raised $1,500 for park infrastructure and interpretive programs. After the march, there was a luncheon for the participants and prizes were awarded for the highest pledge amounts collected.

    Highlands Hammock State Park

    Coosa Middle School, Georgia

    Coosa Middle School had a school wide march for their March For Parks event. 1250 students, teachers, and volunteers participated in the March For Parks event. Coosa Middle School raised $12,000 for the school’s Classroom in the Wild Project. The March For Parks Event was a big success.

    Sweetwater Creek State Park, Georgia

    Sweetwater Creek State Park had approximately 200 people participate in their March For Parks event which raised $2300 for the construction of a new nature center. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held to get the center started and a visitor appreciation lunch was served to all participants. Park volunteers conducted guided tours of the mill ruins and demonstrations on water quality and pollutants of the park. All of the March For Parks activities were focused on Sweetwater Creek State Park and Earth Day in order to raise awareness of what resources the park has to offer as well as what actions need to be taken to preserve the park.

    Beaver Dam State Park, Illinois

    Beaver Dam State Park held their March For Parks event on April 17th 2004. The March For Parks event was an Earth Day celebration that involved local area Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops working together to provide a nature program. This year’s program promoted nature awareness, protecting the Earth, and the beauty of state and national parks.

    Each year, the organizers of the March For Parks event chooses a different area park project to raise money for. This year, the Midwest SOARRING Foundation was chosen and the money raised will go towards the development of Midwest SOARRING’s Cultural and Environmental Education Center.

    The March For Parks event involved the creation of several stations set up throughout Beaver Dam State Park. One of the stations was a large tipi that told taught provided education on the life and culture of Native Americans and make arts and crafts. Another station involved a trip to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Voyageur Canoe. Several groups received the opportunity to take a 40 minute cruise around Beaver Dam Lake.

    Westmoreland County Park, Pennsylvania

    Westmoreland County Park had over 350 Marchers, 27 Teams, and 55 Sponsors for their March For Parks event. The March For Parks event raised $21,500 to help preserve and protect Westmoreland County Park. Money raised from the March For Parks event will be utilized to improve the existing parks and create new trails in the parks. Participants marched throughout the Upper and Lower lakes of the park and then gathered together for a pig roast lunch. The event concluded with the presentation of team awards for fundraising and a door prize giveaway that contained over 50 prizes.
