New fires

The Rhode Fire is ¼ acre, located near Colonial Campground. A helicopter dropped 4 loads of water on it Saturday, due to its proximity to the campground and Highway 20.

The Flush Fire and Tank Fire are both small fires discovered Aug 1 near the Crapper Fire, just south of Newhalem. Several water drops from a helicopter were made on each fire, due to their proximity to the infrastructure around Newhalem.

The Thornton Fire was 1/10 acre. Discovered Saturday afternoon, it was suppressed by 4 firefighters, due to the possible threat to Highway 20 and adjacent power lines.

The following new fires are being managed by Fire Personnel

The Elija Fire is 10 acres, located about 4 miles above Highway 20, on the east side of Panther Creek.

The Cascade Fire is 1/10 acre, located southwest of, and below, Boston Basin, above the Cascade River Road.

The Bouck Fire is 1/10 acre, located near Bouck Lake.

The Fourth of July Fire is ½ acre, located in Panther Creek.

Ongoing fires

The Crapper Fire is 2 acres. The fire is located about one mile southeast of Newhalem and the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center near the Newhalem Creek Trail.

The Panther Creek Fire has continued to burn down to and along Panther Creek to the west – away from Highway 20. The fire is now estimated to be 220 acres in size. Fire personnel continue to manage this fire and will take planned actions if or when the fire reaches specified parameters.

The Luna Pilot Fire has burned less than one acre in the northern region of the park. The fire is on the northeast flank of Luna Peak, just up from Luna Creek, and is showing very little activity.

TRAIL CLOSURES:

The Panther Creek Trail is closed from the trailhead on Highway 20 to Fourth of July Pass until further notice. Except for this trail closure, Park visitor facilities have not been affected by any of the fires.
