The National Park Service (NPS) will be preparing an environmental assessment (EA) for the construction of a maintenance facility at Kelso in Mojave National Preserve.This facility will centralize existing maintenance operations that are currently located at a maintenance yard in Baker, California, at the Kelso Depot, and at Hole-in-the-Wall. The National Park Service has identified land south of the railroad tracks at Kelso as suitable for administrative uses.It lies close to the junction of two main paved roads - Kelbaker and Kelso-Cima - and is geographically close to the center of the Preserve.This site will allow reasonable access to other NPS facilities within the Preserve and to two interstate highways on the Preserve's northern and southern boundaries.It is two-tenths of a mile from the Kelso Schoolhouse and an employee housing area further north along Kelso-Cima Road. The proposed facility will be 13,800 square feet set within a secured compound on three acres of previously disturbed land.Inside the compound, the NPS plans to construct a maintenance building with shops, offices and indoor storage; a covered parking area, outdoor storage, material bins and a pole barn.A two-lane paved roadway will connect it to Kelbaker Road.The existing well associated with the Kelso Depot will also provide water to this facility.
