Comprehensive Management Plan: Adaptive Reuse and Other Provisions
In the National Park Service, Comprehensive Management Plans set the long-term goals for the park. They define the natural and cultural resource conditions to be achieved and maintained over time. The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area's Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) stresses that the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area corridor will be “an exemplary role model for historic preservation and adaptive use of historic structures.” To accomplish this goal, Mississippi National River and Recreation Area has requested that the Society thoroughly examine the adaptive reuse of the Cavalry Barracks at Fort Snelling.

Below you will find the documentation related to the Society’s effort to consider adaptive reuse. The National Park Service has asked for details for how the Society arrived at its cost estimates for reuse, but we have not received this information. If you have ideas about how to pursue adaptive reuse of the Cavalry Barracks for the Society’s new visitor center, we would like to hear them.

The CMP covers other resource types Congress established the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area to help protect in addition to historic and cultural. These include: scenic, natural, recreational, scientific and ecological.
