The National Park Service is partnering with the Washington State Patrol in a criminal investigation of an incident that took place on September 14, 2013 in Kettle River Campground within Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Due to concurrent jurisdiction, both the State of Washington and the federal government have the right to conduct a criminal investigation to determine if state and federal regulations have been violated, and are coordinating closely in their efforts. Additionally, as is standard after any incident involving serious use of force, the National Park Service is completing an internal administrative investigation into the incident.Results of the internal investigation are legally considered an extension of an employee's personnel file and, as such, are protected from public disclosure by the Privacy Act. Around 10:30 p.m. on September 14, 2013, National Park Service rangers responded to a noise complaint at the Kettle River Campground.An altercation ensued and one individual was shot by one of the responding rangers.The individual was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center and remains in satisfactory condition.A suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Spokane County jail. Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, including Kettle River Campground, is open to the public.The park is continuing to work to ensure the safety of the visiting public and provide for an enjoyable recreational experience. |
