Operating Hours & Seasons
All three units are open year-round. There are two museums in the monument and both are located in the Sheep Rock unit. There are no visitor centers in the Painted Hills or Clarno units.

10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Daily
Cant Ranch Historic Home
Usually open Monday - Thursday
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The house is open Fridays when staff is available. Closed weekends. The grounds and trails at the ranch are open year round.

150th Anniversary of Paleontology in Oregon
Come celebrate the 150 year anniversary of Oregon's fossil discovery story, which started right here in the John Day Fossil Bed region of eastern Oregon at the end of the Civil War in 1865. This year is also the 40th anniversary of the parks founding.
All Events Held in the Sheep Rock Unit and All are Open to the Public. The Thomas Condon Paleontology Center will open at 9am on July 25th.

The paleontology museum is always open on Federal holidays from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. The Cant Ranch house is open on these holidays when staffing allows.
