International Jazz Day at Independence National Historical Park
Philadelphia- April 30 is "International Jazz Day" and Independence National Historical Park, the Independence Visitor Center and the Friends of Independence invite all neighbors, friends and visitors to join us in celebrating!
On Monday, April 30, a quartet with The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts will perform a free concert on Independence Mall at Crosswalk Café from 4 pm - 6 pm. Join us for great music, food and beverages.

International Jazz Day, designated by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), aims to bring together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about the art of jazz, its roots, its future and its impact. This international art form will be celebrated for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity, eradicating discrimination, promoting freedom of expression, fostering gender equality, and reinforcing the role of youth for social change.
Jazz is a unique musical style that originated in the United States but has its roots in Africa and merges both African and European music traditions. Jazz provided one of the first forums for freedom of expression and gender empowerment, and is an example of the transformative power of this fundamental human right. During the twentieth century, jazz proved to be a universal language spreading over the continents, influencing and being influenced by other kinds of music, evolving as a merging cultural element for supporters all around the world, with no distinction of race, religion, or national origin.
Independence Hall is the first of only 21 UNESCO-designated World Heritage sites in the United States. Most of the U.S. World Heritage Sites are units of the National Park System and include some of our most iconic places, like Independence Hall, the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks. This year, 2012, marks the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.
The performance by The Clef Club is sponsored by the Independence Visitor Center, the Friends of Independence, and Independence National Historical Park. The Clef Club enhances the cultural presence of jazz in Philadelphia and promotes projects that benefit jazz musicians. The Clef Club preserves and promotes jazz history by providing educational and cultural services.
Situated in the center of Independence National Historical Park, Crosswalk Café is the ideal setting to take in views of Independence Hall. A unit of the National Park Service, Independence National Historical Park was created by an Act of Congress on June 28, 1948. Accredited by the American Association of Museums, Independence NHP covers almost 54 acres in Philadelphia's Old City, and includes Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Congress Hall, Franklin Court, and other historic buildings associated with the founding of the United States. The park is open from 9:00 am daily with the exception of Christmas day. A visit to Independence National Historical Park should start at the Independence Visitor Center, located at 6th and Market Streets. Here, visitors can pick up a park brochure, park map, and the free, timed tickets required for Independence Hall.
