Shenandoah
Valley Battlefields National Historic District
From
1861 to 1865 the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia was caught in the crossfire
between the North and the south. Because of its strategic location, this
fertile agricultural valley became a significant theater of war. Today
15 battlefields, over 320 sites, towns, villages, and farms in this eight-county
National Historic District attest to the struggle, courage, and perserverance
of the soldiers and civilians who shaped this turning point in American
history.
Authorized November 12, 1996.
