The Planning & Production Process

Designing a unigrid brochure using desktop publishing software

Early stages in the process of designing a unigrid brochure using desktop publishing software.

How We Work With You at Harpers Ferry Center

The planning and production of a brochure or handbook is a complex and sometimes lengthy venture, demanding commitment of time and resources by both Harpers Ferry Center and the park staff. The park is an active partner throughout the project, reviewing and approving each stage and lending its expertise and on-site experience to help make its publication useful, attractive, and authoritative. HFC is responsible for producing the brochure or handbook, but the publication is truly a joint creation.

Each project is carried to completion by a team made up of a designer, cartographer, writer-editor, and a member of the park staff who acts as the main contact. This park staff member may have several other staff members involved in the project. The editor is responsible for the coordination of the project and will be the main Harpers Ferry Center contact during the course of the project. Harpers Ferry Center publications are funded through ONPS money; parks pay publication shipping costs. Planning a New Brochure »

While the basic steps of planning and production of new brochures and handbooks are the same, there is a great difference in the amount of time and money involved. Those contemplating a park handbook should learn more about planning and producing a new handbook before taking the plunge. Planning a New Handbook »

We divide our work for you and your park into two major categories, new work and reprint work. Reprint work involves correcting and reprinting your park brochure or handbook as your supply runs out. Brochures are generally reprinted every year and handbooks every three to four years. Reprinting Publications »

Harpers Ferry Center team members will try to visit the park during a new brochure or handbook project, but we encourage the park staff to also visit Harpers Ferry Center to better understand the process and to increase the opportunities for face-to-face discussion. To help you find your way here, we have online maps and directions to facilitate your visit to Harpers Ferry Center. Directions to Harpers Ferry Center »
