Brochure for Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. |
|
The primary use of National Park Service brochures
is as a free item given away at national parks. There are, however,
other ways the brochures can been used. These are subject to guidelines
set by the Government Printing Office:
It is illegal for a park to sell the official park brochure
from the supply paid for by appropriated National Park Service funds.
If, however, a park wants to give away additional free brochures,
it can “ride” the normal print order—that is,
pay for additional brochures to be printed—at a cost of 5
to 10 cents per copy. Nonprofit organizations, such as local Chambers
of Commerce, often want to distribute our brochures, but a park
cannot give away more than 50 copies to any one party. These organizations
can obtain brochures for free distribution by contacting Tracey
Rissler, Publications Printing Specialist at Harpers Ferry
Center, and riding the print order at the current commercial rates
(phone: 304-535-6414; email: Tracey_Rissler@nps.gov).
Cooperating associations can sell a brochure to a visitor if the
visitor has already received a free brochure and would like another.
The number of brochures it needs is added to the print order at
a cost of 14 cents per copy (minimum of 1,000 copies). The association
is invoiced for the printing after the brochures are delivered.
Shipping charges for the sales copies are included in the 14 cents
price. The recommended sale price is 25 cents. Associations are
currently selling second copies at 15 parks. Contact Tracey
Rissler, Publications Printing Specialist at Harpers Ferry
Center (see contact information above).
Merchants can obtain supplies of National Park Service brochures
for sale. They normally will work out an arrangement with the cooperating
association, in which the association will add the number of brochures
the merchant needs to the print order and sell the brochures to
the merchant for resale. It is also possible for the merchant to
purchase printing films directly from Harpers Ferry Center. In neither
case is the merchant permitted to alter the brochure in any way
before selling it. For additional information about obtaining National
Park Service brochures, contact Tracey Rissler,
Publications Printing Specialist at Harpers Ferry Center (see contact
information above).
