Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History:
An Exhibit Case Study & Summative Peer Review
The Mammal Hall Study Report is a fourteen-page, illustrated document
evaluating the Smithsonian Institution's Kenneth E. Behring Family
Hall of Mammals at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington,
DC. Media specialists from Harpers Ferry Center toured the hall
and met with Smithsonian project staff on March 9, 2004. This summative
evaluation by NPS media staff constitutes an informal peer review
of a major metropolitan museum exhibition. The data in the report
can be used in media planning and training activities. Additional
photos are available from IMI. NPS exhibit projects are almost always
smaller in budget and size than this one, yet our exhibits are often
compared to these.
We are grateful to the Smithsonian NMNH staff, especially Project
Manager Sally Love for allowing us to study the exhibit and compare
notes with her project staff. The comments from our media staff
show a high degree of respect for the work of the Smithsonian.
