Exhibit conservation is devoted to promoting preservation-responsible
exhibitry.
The National Park Service (NPS), together with several partners,
has taken on the challenge of developing a more systematic approach
to including preservation in the exhibit planning, design, and fabrication
process. Conservation has embarked on a major project to create
a preservation framework and tool for both NPS personnel and exhibition
specialists in general.
Traditionally, museum exhibits have not received the same methodical
attention from conservators as have museum storage systems. Publications
like the NPS’s Exhibit Conservation Guidelines attempts to
bridge the gap between conservation and exhibition by presenting
a structure for incorporating conservation into exhibit development
and production.
