NAI 2003 Interpretive Media Awards
A series of new bilingual waysides, created for Mission San Juan
and Mission Espada, recently took first place at the 2003 Interpretive
Media Awards ceremony at the National Association of Interpretation
(NAI) convention in Sparks, Nevada. Harpers Ferry Center’s
waysides team – Mark Johnson, Chad Beale, Larry Matson, and
Bruce Kaiser – share this award with San Antonio Missions
NHP interpreters Cherry Payne, Liz Dupree, Dava McGahee, and Dr.
Roz Rock.
Planning, designing, and producing waysides, like any interpretive
media project, takes the support of many specialists to get the
job done. Thanks go to HFC Media Development employees Richard Hoffman,
Betsy Ehrlich, Roberta Wendel, and Susan Haines, HFC Media Assets
employees Teresa Vazquez de Vado, Wade Myers, and Terry Smallwood,
HFC Acquisition Management employees JoAnne Grove, Annette Abshire,
Timothy Smearman, Dee Dee Dinges, Melody Wolfe and Robin Butler,
and HFC Programs and Budget office’s Marilyn Williams and
Donna Wenner. All played key roles in placing San Antonio’s
newest interpretive messages out into the public eye on the historic
missions’ landscapes.
Contractors provide Harpers Ferry Center with additional professional
expertise and technical capacity. For the new San Antonio waysides,
IDIQ artists Steven Patricia and Richard Schlecht developed paintings.
Novelist Mario Bencastro translated the final English texts into
Spanish. GS Images’ Doug Wright, Judy Fox, David Helene, and
Jackie Woodcock screenprinted the panels. Hopewell Manufacturing’s
Paul Kramer and Jim McLeaf built the aluminum bases.
One hundred sixty-seven media products in twelve categories were
entered in this year’s NAI Annual Interpretive Media Excellence
Awards. Harpers Ferry Center is proud to recognize the accomplishments
of this outstanding team. We thank our San Antonio colleagues for
nominating this HFC-product for national evaluation. We consider
it a privilege to have had the experience of working on this challenging
project with you. |
